How To Cook Boba

Ever walk into a boba shop that's run out of boba and opt to wait it out just to find out it'll be about a 30 minute wait? Outrageous! We know! Well, to let y'all in on a little secret, the reasoning behind that lengthy wait period is that cooking boba is a pretty time consuming.

The average amount of time it takes to cook boba is about an hour and a half, not to mention the sweetening process.

boba tip: If you have a favorite boba shop, visit them 2 hours after opening. This way you can ensure the boba is fully cooked and fully sweetened!

Cooking boba is not for faint of heart. It takes a whole lot of patience and an immense love for boba to follow through the entire process.

But we promise you, it's worth it.

If you're ready to embark on your journey to become your own bobarista, below are the materials and steps needed to get properly #bobawasted:

Materials Needed:

(This specific recipe is based on our boba kit. If you choose to use a different boba kit or boba in general, as long as the boba used is Grade A quality, this recipe should work just fine!)

  • A pot with a lid

  • Wooden spoon or spatula (something to stir with)

  • 5 and 1/2 cups of water

  • Strainer or colander

  • Tea strainer or French press

  • Measuring cups

  • Measuring spoons

  • Two 16oz cups (make sure they're microwave safe)

  • Heat safe mixing bowl

  • 2 cups of ice

Directions:

  1. Bring 5 cups of water to a rolling boil

  2. Reduce the heat to medium and pour the boba inside

  3. Quickly stir for 15 seconds while making sure nothing sticks together

  4. Bring it back up to a simmer and cover the pot halfway

  5. Set a timer for 30 minutes

  6. Stir the boba every 10 minutes to ensure they don't stick together

  7. After 30 minutes, take the pot off the heat and stir for 15 seconds

  8. Put the lid on and set another timer for 35 minutes

  9. Strain the boba and rinse with warm water to stop further cooking

  10. Put the strained boba into a bowl

  11. Add in the brown sugar and 1/2 cup of water

  12. Stir for 10 seconds and let the boba soak inside the sugar bath for another 15 minutes before serving. The longer it sits inside the sugar bath, the sweeter your boba will be!

BOBA TIP: Make sure to consume the boba within 6 hours! If you wait any longer than that, the balls will start to become hard!
